'GoldenEye 007' is Making a Triumphant Return on Nintendo Switch and Xbox

Nintendo revealed during its Nintendo Direct livestream Tuesday that the classic shooter GoldenEye 007 is coming to the Nintendo Switch. The game will be available for free to members of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service. The developers of the game, Rare, also announced that GoldenEye 007 will release on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One as a part of the Game Pass subscription service.

Nintendo Switch owners and Xbox owners alike will be able to relive the classic experience from start to finish, fully remastered for the modern day. Rare tweeted shortly after the livestream that GoldenEye 007 will be, "faithfully recreated" for the Xbox family. This includes smoother frame rates, resolutions up to 4K (on supported displays) achievements, and local split-screen multiplayer.

However, online multiplayer will be exclusive to the Switch version of the game. The Xbox version will only contain split-screen multiplayer. Members of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service will receive the classic game at no extra cost, this offer also applies to members of Xbox Game Pass. Players who own the digital copy of 2015's Rare Replay on Xbox will also receive GoldenEye 007 for free. No release date has been made public just yet, so stay tuned for further information.

Originally releasing in 1997, exclusively on the Nintendo 64, GoldenEye 007 set itself apart from the competition for its stellar action and stealth gameplay. The single-player campaign was praised for its faithfulness to classic James Bond film Goldeneye, and for its engaging gun fights and level design. What made the game shine however was its addictive split-screen multiplayer. Friends and family alike came together and would spend hours playing the four-player split-screen mode, fighting against each other as iconic characters from the 007 series. From James Bond to Oddjob, the game offered an addictive and sporty feel that made it a classic.

  2. Glad to see they’re doing this. Shame the online support’s locked to Xbox and Switch, though.
